Sight Words Bingo: Dolch Primer Words
Dolch primer words are the bridge from beginning reading to independent reading. These 52 words include high-frequency function words (he, she, they, was, with) and early content words (black, brown, white, good, pretty) that appear on nearly every page of early chapter books. Primer bingo accelerates the recognition fluency that unlocks independent reading.

Why Primer Words Are Harder
Primer words include many visually similar pairs that confuse early readers:
- was / saw — same letters, reversed order (common reversal error)
- he / she / the / they — all contain "he"
- that / what / there / where — share "h" and common patterns
- all / am / are / at / ate — five words beginning with "a"
Bingo is particularly useful for these confusable pairs because students must discriminate between similar-looking words quickly — exactly the skill fluent reading requires.

Fluency Connection
Sight word automaticity means recognizing a word instantly within connected text — not just in isolation. After a bingo session, show students a simple passage and time their reading. Repeat monthly. Students who achieve automaticity on primer words typically read 60-80 words per minute by end of kindergarten — a strong predictor of 1st grade reading success.
